FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
EMILY ROAN __ Age 17
I ran because I had to.
Because if I stopped, I would remember.
And remembering was worse than bleeding.
The branches tore at my skin like claws. I didn't feel the pain at first. Not through the panic. Not through the sound of her voice still
echoing behind me. ''You don't understand what you're doing, Emily. Please, just come back inside.''
But I did understand. I understand everything now.
The night was wet, silent, and too dark, and I was too loud. My breath. My footsteps. My thoughts. Too loud.
I didn't mean to find it __ whatever it was. The papers. The letters. The photo.
And her face, twisted in a truth she'd kept buried for too long.
''I didn't have a choice,'' she said.
But we always have a choice. Don't we?
My legs gave out halfway down the hill behind the house. Mud coated my palms. My knees. My memory.
I wanted to scream for Ava, but my throat refused.
I wanted to tell her everything.
About her mother.
About the lie
About the baby.
But it was too late.
A crack of thunder. A Snap of something behind me.
And then... silence.
I turned toward the sound—only last time.
One word, barely a whisper in my life:
''Ava...''
